Offshore Wind Ready to Reduce Oil Dependence
Wednesday, January 02, 2008
BOSTON, MA -- “Developing offshore wind power is one way America can become less dependent on imported oil,” said Cape Wind President Jim Gordon in response to the news that the price of oil surpassed $100 per barrel today. “Offshore wind is clean, abundant, inexhaustible, and here -- you don’t have to import it from the Middle East,” Gordon continued.

Cape Wind Statement on Cape Cod Commission Vote
Thursday, October 18, 2007
“With the price of oil approaching $90 per barrel, increasing calls for energy independence and action on global warming it’s sad and disappointing that the Cape Cod Commission would vote to deny Cape Wind’s application for its buried electric cables to deliver 75% of the Cape and Islands electricity with clean, renewable energy.
“The Commission’s denial based, not on the merits but, on claims that Cape Wind provided insufficient information does not square with the record. Since 2001, Cape Wind has been providing extensive information about these cables to the Cape Cod Commission and State and Federal agencies. In fact, in 2005 the Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board approved Cape Wind’s electric cable because it found that Cape Wind would provide needed renewable electricity, deliver significant air quality benefits, lower electric costs and increase electric transmission reliability. In 2007, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs approved Cape Wind’s Final Environmental Impact Report and Massachusetts Environmental Secretary, Ian Bowles, wrote:
‘Overall, the project represents a balanced and thoughtful commitment to action that will contribute to the long term preservation and enhancement of our environment.’
“Cape Wind is committed to ensuring that Massachusetts becomes a global leader in offshore renewable energy while contributing to a healthier environment and increased energy and economic security. We intend to pursue the necessary relief required to override the Cape Cod Commission’s attempt to delay important renewable energy benefits for Massachusetts citizens.”

Strong Sea Breeze at Cape Wind Site During Times of Highest Electric Demand
Monday, July 02, 2007
BOSTON, MA, July 2, 2007 – Cape Wind’s Scientific Data Tower has recorded strong winds on Horseshoe Shoal in Nantucket Sound during each of the past ten record electric demand days in New England. These results are available in a new report published by Cape Wind today entitled “Comparison of Cape Wind Scientific Data Tower Wind Speed Data with ISO New England List of Top Ten Electric Demand Days”.
The report finds that Cape Wind would have produced an average of 321 megawatts when electric demand was at its peak during each of the past ten record-setting electric demand days as recorded by the Independent System Operator of New England (ISO-NE), the region’s electric grid manager. Nine of these record demand days have occurred on very hot afternoons of the summers of 2006 and 2005 and one occurred last week on June 27, 2007. Cape Wind’s production of 321 megawatts during these times of record electric demand represents 76% of Cape Wind’s maximum potential of 420 megawatts and is 76% greater than Cape Wind’s average expected output of 182 megawatts.

Cape Wind Statement on new DOD Report
Friday, June 15, 2007
Statement by Cape Wind Communications Director Mark Rodgers on the newly released Department of Defense Report entitled, “Wind Turbine Analysis for Cape Cod Air Force Station Early Warning Radar and Beale Air Force Base Upgraded Early Warning Radar”:
FALMOUTH, MA -- Today’s Department of Defense (DOD) report is good news for Cape Wind. The report clearly finds Cape Wind to be outside of the wind turbine offset zone being proposed for PAVE PAWS radar systems.
Now the DOD has reached the same determination as the US Air Force – that Cape Wind will not negatively impact the Air Force PAVE PAWS radar system. This report puts to rest in a final form any reasonable concern about this issue.
Unfortunately, the organization that formed to oppose Cape Wind - the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound (also called Save Our Sound) - is yet again resorting to fear-mongering to twist the findings of this report to suit their narrow agenda.
The reality is that projects like Cape Wind strengthen national security by making America more energy independent and less reliant on foreign sources of energy.
